Grishneshwar Temple History :
The Grishneswar temple is a prime example of Maratha temple architecture and structure. The grishneshwar jyotirlinga temple is made of red rocks and consists of a five-tiered shikara. The temple was rebuilt in the 16th century by Maloji Bhosale of Verul (Shivaji’s grandfather) and later in the 18th century by queen Ahilyabai Holkar. She is credited with the reconstruction of several major Hindu temples, including the Kashi Vishvanath temple in Varanasi, a Vishnu temple in Gaya, and a much larger Shiva Jyotirlinga temple in Somnath Temple.
This 240 ft x 185 ft temple is India’s smallest Jyotirlinga temple. Dashavataras of Vishnu are carved in red stone halfway up the temple. A court hall is supported by 24 pillars. There are carvings on these pillars that summarize various Shiva legends and mythologies. The Garbhagriha is 17 ft x 17 ft in size. The Lingamurty is oriented eastward. In the courtroom, there is a Nandi bull. Ghrishneshwar Temple is a revered temple in the Maharashtra state. Many Hindu gods and goddesses are depicted in the temple’s carvings and sculptures.
