Navratri 2019:

Navratri is a nine-night Hindu festival that is celebrated in the autumn every year. It is observed in different parts of the Indian subcontinent for different reasons and celebrated differently. There are four seasonal Navratri, theoretically.

In practice, however, it is the post-monsoon autumn festival called Sharada Navratri which is the most celebrated in honor of the divine female Amba / AmbeDevi (Durga). The festival is held in the bright half of Ashvins Hindu calendar month, which typically falls in September and October’s Gregorian months.

The Durga Puja is synonymous with Navratri in India’s eastern and northeastern states, where goddess Durga is fighting and emerging victorious over the buffalo demon to help restore Dharma. The festival is synonymous in the northern and western states with “Rama Lila” and Dussehra celebrating god Rama’s battle and victory over the demon king Ravana.

The victory of various goddesses, of Rama or Saraswati, is celebrated in southern states. The common theme in all cases is Good over Evil’s battle and victory based on a regionally famous epic or legends like the Ramayana or the Devi Mahatmya.

Celebrations include stage decorations, legend recital, story enactment, and Hindu scripture chanting. Also, the nine days are major cultural events in the crop season, such as competitive design and pandal staging, a family visits these pandals and a public celebration of Hindu culture classical and folk dances.

On the last day, called the Vijayadashami or Dussehra, the statues are either immersed in a body of water like the river and ocean, or the statue symbolizing the evil is burned with fireworks marking the destruction of evil. The festival also starts preparing for one of the most important and widely celebrated holidays, Diwali, the lights festival that takes place twenty days after the Vijayadashami or Dussehra.
