Srisailam Temple:

Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple or Srisailam Temple, situated in Srisailam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, is a Hindu temple dedicated to the deities Srisailam Mallikarjuna and Srisailam Bramarambika.

As this srisailam mallikarjuna temple is referred to as one of the twelve Jyothirlingas of Lord Shiva and as one of the eighteen srisailam shakti peeth of Goddess Parvati, it is important to the Hindu sects of both Shaivam and Shaktam. Shiva is worshipped as Srisailam Mallikarjuna, and the lingam is portrayed. Parvati, his consort, is portrayed as Srisailam Bramarambika. It is one of the only three temples in India that are revered by both Srisailam Jyotirlinga and Srisailam Shakti Peeth.

Srisailam Temple Legend

The legend is that Kumar Kartikeya, Lord Shiva’s younger son, was once furious, and came from Kailash to the Kronch Hills. Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati came and stayed here under the names of Arjun and Mallika. The place and the srisailam temple were thus called Srisailam Mallikarjuna.

Ganesha and Kartikeya debated as to who should first get married when Shiva and Parvati agreed to find appropriate brides for their sons. Shiva said that the one in Pradakshinam who goes around the world will get married first. Ganesha went around his parents 7 times by the time Kartikeya could go around the world on his vahana (for, according to Shastras, going around one ‘s parents in pradakshinam is equal to going around the world once (Bhu Pradakshinam)).

Siva had Buddhi (intellect), Siddhi (spiritual power), and Ganesha married Riddhi (prosperity). On his return, Kartikeya was angered and went away to remain alone in the name of Kumar Brahmachari on Mount Kraunja. He wanted to move to another position when he saw his father coming over to pacify him, but at the insistence of the Devas, he remained close by. Shrishailam came to be regarded as the srisailam location where Shiva and Parvati lived.

As per Hindu mythology, the presiding deity was worshipped with jasmine (locally called Mallika) in the form of Linga (an iconic form of Shiva), leading to the name of Mallikarjuna as the presiding deity.

At Srisailam Mallikarjuna Swamy temple, Mahashivratri is the biggest festival celebrated.

Srisailam Temple History:

There is inscriptional evidence from the Satavahana dynasty that places the srisailam devasthanam from the 2nd century onwards. During the time of King Harihara I of the Vijayanagara Empire, most modern additions were made. During the Reddi Kingdom period, the veerashero mandapam and pathala ganga steps were built.

About Srisailam (Srisailam Temple Architecture)

The complex of temples spans 2 hectares and houses four gateway towers known as gopurams. The srisailam devasthanam has various shrines, with the most famous being those of Srisailam Mallikarjuna and Srisailam Bramarambika. Many halls are housed in the srisailam temple complex; the Mukha Mandapa constructed during the Vijayanagar era is the most prominent. Situated facing east, the srisailam mallikarjuna temple is.

There are several pillars of the central mandapam, with an enormous Nandikeshwara idol. Tall walls measuring 183 m (600 ft) by 152 m (499 ft) and 8.5 m (28 ft) tall are surrounded by the srisailam devasthanam. The precinct has a variety of sculptures, each rising above the other. The Mukamandapa, the hall leading to the sanctum, has pillars that are intricately sculpted. Dating back to the 7th century, the shrine where Srisailam Mallikarjuna is housed is considered the oldest in the srisailam temple. There is a Sahasra linga (1000 linga), believed by Rama to have been commissioned, and five other lingams thought by Pandavas to have been commissioned. The mirror hall has pictures of Nataraja in the first precinct.
