Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy Temple or Annavaram Temple is a Hindu-Vaishnavite temple in the East Godavari district of Annavaram, Andhra Pradesh, India. The Annavaram Satyanarayana Swamy Temple is on a hill named Ratnagiri and is dedicated to Veera Venkata Satyanarayana, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu.Annavaram is situated 32 kilometers from Pithapuram, 51 kilometers from Kakinada and 72 from Rajahmundry.
Annavaram Temple History:
It is assumed that the place was established by the generous residents of the locality for regular distribution of food (free feeding), and hence the place was named Annavaram(annam means food in Telugu). Another version is that the place is called Annavaram, since the presiding deity of the place blesses devotees with anina varam (pronounced or desired boon).
Meruv, the ruler of the hills, and his prince Menaka, did great penance and, by the grace of Lord Vishnu, gave birth to two sons. Another was called Bhadra and the other was named Ratnakar.Bhadra blessed Lord Vishnu with his devotion and penance and became Bhadrachalam with his grace on which Lord Sri Rama had settled for ever. Ratnakara wants to imitate his brother, and by his penance he succeeded in pleasing Lord Vishnu to choose him as Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy, while Ratnakara remained Ratnagiri (hill).
The temple of Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayanaswamy is the main temple on the hill of Ratnagiri. There is also the temple of Sri Rama and the shrines of Vana Durga and Kanaka Durga in the vicinity. The Temple of Gramadevatha “Nerellamma” (village deity) is located in the village at the foot of the hill.
It is said that one of the village Brahmins named Earanki prakasam had a dream in which the lord had appeared and told him that his vigraha had been left abounded on the hill without worship, and that they would trace it and recreate it.That Brahmin informed Sri Raja I.V. Ramarayanam, then the Zamindar of Gorasa of the kirlampudi estate, and both of them, along with other villagers, traced the idol on the hill, worshiped it, and installed it. Right now on Sravana Suddha Vidiya of the Telugu year of Khara (i.e.) 1891 A.D. (Fasli 1301).
Originally a small shed was built in 1891, when an idol was discovered. Later, in the course of time, a temple was built with the aid of villagers and other nearby devotees. Subsequently, the temple was reconstructed in 1933-34 with locally available stone. Earlier, when the same structure was dilapidated, it was rebuilt between 2011-2012.
Annavaram Satyanarayana Swamy Temple:
The idol is about 13 feet high in a cylindrical shape, the base is in the lower sanctum representing Lord Brahma, and the top is in the upper sanctuary representing Lord Vishnu. The middle portion is Lord Siva. There are some temples representing the unity of the Lords Hari and Hara in some places, and this is the place where even Brahma, who is generally denied the worship of the temple, is joined together with the other two, and the creator (Brahma), the protector (Vishnu) and the destroyer (Siva) are worshiped simultaneously. The image of the Lord forming a single idol of Trimurthis-Brahma , Vishnu and Siva is a special attraction.
The Annavaram Temple is on two floors; the ground floor contains the yantra and the peetham of the Lord. There are four gods on the four sides of the yantra, namely Ganapati, Suryanarayana Swamy, Bala Tripurasundari and Maheswaraswamy, which makeup Panchayathanam. The Moola virat of Lord Satyanarayana swamy is in the middle of the 1st level, the portrait of Goddess Anantha Lakshmi Ammavaru is on the right, and Lord Shiva is on the left. The idols are of exquisite grace and elegance, and they are wrapped in the golden kavacham. The adjacent shrine of Sri Rama seems to be the holiest place where the devotees found the original self-maintained idol of Sri Satyanarayanaswamy. Lord Sri Rama is considered to be the Kshetra Palaka of this holy habitation of Lord Satyadeva.
