Temple Ulsoor is in the Halasuru(Ulsoor) neighbourhood of Bangalore,
India. The Oldest Shiva Temple in Bangalore dating back to the Chola era,
it is devoted to the Hindu deity Shiva. Major additions or changes were
created under the reign of Hiriya Kempe Gowda II during the early Vijayanagara
era. This temple is one of the famous shiva temple in Bangalore.
Someshwara Temple Ulsoor history:
Benjamin Lewis Rice describes a
legend behind the temple consecration in the "Gazetter of Mysore"
(1887).Kempe Gowda rode a long way from his capital, Yelahanka, while on a
hunt.He lay down under a tree, being tired, and falling asleep. He was seen in a
dream by the local deity Someshwara, who advised him to construct a temple in
his honor using buried treasure. The chief would obtain divine favor in
exchange. Kempe Gowda discovered the treasure and finished the Ulsoor Shiva
temple with devotion.
Someshwara Temple Ulsoor Plan:
The sanctum is linked to a closed
mantapa (hall) whose walls are adorned in frieze with pilasters and carvings.
The closed mantapa is linked to a spacious open mantapa consisting of four big
"bays" (four-pillar region) projecting. The normal Yali (mythical beast)
pillars are the piers leading to the sanctum and those facing out from the open
mantapa. The eastern gopuram is a typical structure of the 16th century that is
well performed.
The complex contains several
noteworthy sculptures and ornamental characteristics. An impressive pillar
(kambha or nandi) above the entrance door (gopura) stands close the high tower.
The tower itself displays well-sculpted pictures of Hindu mythology deities and
goddesses.
